Why teams pick DataContract
Data quality is the trust problem in data platforms. An analyst who has been burned by a dashboard showing wrong numbers because an upstream pipeline changed will stop trusting the platform. Rebuilding that trust is harder than building it in the first place.
Data contracts are the mechanism that makes quality a stated commitment rather than an implicit assumption. A contract says: this table will have at least 10,000 rows by 9am every Monday, the revenue column will never be null, and the customer_id will always be a valid UUID. These checks run automatically and the result is visible to anyone who depends on the data.
The impact analysis feature is the one that changes behaviour upstream. When a data producer can see that 14 dashboards and 3 ML models depend on their table, they think differently about a schema change. The consumer access request workflow makes those dependencies explicit before the data product is published, not after a pipeline breaks.
